Katrina believes that teaching is the privilege and duty of every musician and even more so as a conductor. She seeks to value the preexisting knowledge of each member of her choirs while also leading the choir, be they children or adults, to a deeper understanding of their own voices and the music they are learning. When Katrina was adjudicating classical music festivals in Saskatchewan, she came to a fuller appreciation of her role in inspiring the students she met, but also the parents and audience members through her discussions of musicality, technique, music history, and more. She seeks to make every rehearsal and concert an artistically satisfying experience.
Her career teaching piano lessons has given her vast exposure to the different learning styles of students of music. She strives to bring the level of interpersonal understanding required in private lessons to the podium and the classroom. She has always been passionate about getting musicians to make music together, no matter their level of skill. Moreover, Katrina has also taught and tutored theory at the university level and believes that theory and musicianship instruction is an integral part of a well-rounded music education from the earliest stages of learning.
One of Katrina's most inspiring teaching experiences was working with the St. Paul's Co-Cathedral Children's Choir in Saskatoon, SK. She was humbled at how quickly the children learnt to create a crystalline choral sound while singing in three and even four parts. Moreover, the children became a team, eager to follow every motion and direction of the conductor. Katrina always strives to foster that kind of teamwork and caring in all of her choirs and classes.Â
